User Research
2 months
Coffee learners cannot effectively understand their brewing outcomes. The actual brewing practice is essential for learners to master the brewing technique, and recording each practice status can help them observe their progress. However, there are no holistic tools to help learners meet their self-examination needs. Therefore, I would like to help learners master their brewing skills by creating a comprehensive note-taking system.
Record the coffee beans and brewing recipe at the same time
The information of coffee beans and brewing methods are comprehensively recorded so that learners can record the types of coffee beans and their respective brewing recipes at the same time.
Simplify the measurement
a. Users don’t need specific brewing equipment eg. scale, electronic kettle. They can use simple equipment to measure.
b. Interface with fewer columns, which looks cleaner and less complicated.
Directly share on social media
Allow users to directly share notes on social media to communicate with other coffee lovers.
Hypothesis
Pour-over coffee equipment is more affordable than an espresso machine, so it is the first choice for many people to learn to brew coffee. However, in the process of practice, it is not easy to effectively improve their brewing skills because of the lack of systematic records.
Therefore, I aim to help users achieve their learning goals by developing an app.Pour-over Journal, a notebook type app designed for pour-over coffee learners especially, enables learners to record the coffee brewing process more quickly and systematically or record their own coffee taste experience.
Business opportunities
This app would be the perfect tool to help learners achieve the skills of brewing pour-over coffee. It also can create more communication between the professional barista and coffee learners.
• Self-growth: Improve coffee-brewing techniques and breakthrough learning dilemmas.
• Communicate more closely: Learners can communicate more easily with professional baristas and coffee roasters.
• Coffee education: Promote coffee culture and make the coffee community more prosperous.
Research process
Step 1: Conduct user interviews
Step 2: Drew the persona
Step 3: Create a user journey map
Interview Script
I interviewed six people who are used to brew coffee at home and have tried to record their brewing processes. Their experience of making filter coffee is 2.5 years on average, and one of them is a professional barista and the others are amateur coffee lovers. The main questions I asked:
A. About making coffee
a. What brewing equipment do you have?
b. How often do you make a pour-over coffee?
B. About taking notes
a. When do you take notes?
b. Could you share the motivation for taking notes?
c. What methods and tools have you tried?
d. Could you describe the process and content of your last note?
e. What are the difficulties you come across when taking notes?
f. What are the most important things you consider when taking notes? (While brewing, what is the most important thing to be recorded?)
g. How do you organise the notes?
C. About coffee skill learning
a. How do you learn coffee brewing?
b. Have you shared your coffee brewing experiences with others?
Persona & User journey
According to the interview results, the things users care the most about are:
• Complete notes effortlessly:
Many interviewees have the habit of making coffee every day, so if the recording process is complicated, it will reduce their willingness to record and spend too much of their time.
• Track the effectiveness of practices:
Interviewees want a straightforward system that allows them to view their notes, track and evaluate their learning achievements.
• Share their outcomes:
Interviewees would like to freely share their notes on social media, especially Instagram, where people can interact with famous professional baristas and communicate with different coffee roasters worldwide.

Test
According to the interviewees and my mentor’s feedback, I revised several parts many times.
• Change process:
Move the page of “taking photo” forward to meet the users’ note-taking habit.
• Add “review” page:
Before users save the new note, they can review and recheck the contents.
• Take all kinds of people into consideration:
colour-blind people, people with Amblyopia
